Paenal, a fabrication yard in Angola, West Africa, supplying the
offshore oil and gas industry, required a health and safety induction
video for English and Portuguese speaking visitors, English speaking
expat workers and Portuguese speaking African operatives.
The safety induction video was to replace an existing Powerpoint
slideshow which required a member of the HSSE team to make the
presentation.
The Paenal yard is at Port Amboim, some four hours drive south of
the
capital Luanda. It is a joint venture between Sonangol, the Angolan
state oil company, DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) of
Korea and SBM Offshore, the Dutch offshore engineering multinational.
Paenal has trained some 400 local Angolan workers in fabrication,
welding and other skills, and will eventually have some 750 local
workers.
Enlightenment Interactive was chosen to produce the health and safety
induction video because of our competitive tender and also our
experience in foreign language
video production and in safety
training for the construction and heavy manufacturing industries.
Method
Normally we would send a producer/scriptwriter on a preliminary visit to
research the location, identify the safety training issues in
partnership with the company HSSE department and then return to the UK
to prepare and agree a video script and shooting plan, before the camera
crew is sent to shoot the video.
In this case, because of the remoteness of the location, it was more
cost effective to prepare a list of likely safety points and agree these
by e-mail in advance of the video shoot.
The director and cameraman then arrived in Angola to shoot footage to
cover these topics, with an emphasis on safe working practices rather
than showing hazards. The Paenal HSSE department helped the video crew,
setting up appropriate scenarios and making sure that every operative
featured in the video was wearing correct PPE and working safely.
The video crew then returned to the UK to write a full script for the
video. When this was approved, it was recorded with an English
voiceover and the safety induction presentation edited as a combination
of video and multimedia content. The material was organised into modules
with menus, so that the Paenal HSSE department could select a full
version for a safety induction for visitors or new employees, in either
English or Portuguese, or select individual topics to support a
particular safety campaign.
When the English version was approved, the script for the voiceover and
all the on-screen text was translated into Portuguese by a translator
specialising in video work. The Paenal HSSE department then approved
this and the voiceover was recorded by a Portuguese narrator. A full
Portuguese version of the safety induction was then prepared.
